What is the logic of setting the hierarchy of Cards as spade, heart, diamond, clubs in this order?
In any Card game points or hierarchy of cards is set as Spade, Heart, Diamond, Clubs like in Bridge, Rummy etc. What is the logic or historical background?
I was taught it has something to with the class structure of the Middle Ages.
The modern deck of cards is basically a tarot deck with the "major arcana" (Death, The Tower, The Fool etc) removed.
The suits of the Tarot are Swords, Staves, Cups and Coins.
Swords represent the nobility, Staves represent the peasants, Cups represent the Clergy, and Coins are the merchants.
